Class description

In this class you will learn how to carve a gourd to look like tooled leather. This class is for all levels of gourders, but you need to know the basics of how to use your carving tool. In addition to the carving, you will do a little bit of wood burning. The instructor will supply patterns.

You should be able to complete the carving and woodburning, but you will finish the painting at home.

What you are required to bring

Bring a medium sized gourd, (approximately 12 inches tall) cleaned outside, it can be left uncut or if cut, it needs to be cleaned inside.

Students also need to bring:

  • A rotary tool (micro carver) and carving burrs

  • Wood burner and wood burning pens (a hobby store wood burner is ok to use)

  • Diamond files

  • Sandpaper

  • A dust mask to be worn when carving

  • Eyeglasses or safety glasses to be worn when carving
