Class description

Are you new to the world of gourds? Are you wondering where you should start? Do you feel there has to be a better and easier way to clean, and design on gourds? Would you like to have more ideas of what products to use and where to purchase them? This class will help to answer these questions and much more.

This is your opportunity to get the information you'll need to begin or continue your adventure into the fun world of gourding. I will discuss how to clean gourds (with hands-on experience), and then I will move on to discuss and demonstrate the basic tools and products we use to design and decorate gourds (with hands-on experience). And best of all, you'll get to make a little southwest bowl, like the photo above, to take home with you. You'll decorate the rim of your gourd bowl, and finish with embellishments such as metal art, rocks, trinkets, feathers and beads.

You'll also have hands on experience with gourd carving, wood burning and cleaning the inside of a gourd.

I will provide everything including your gourd, embellishments, and handouts for this class.

Walk-ins will be accepted if the class is not full.

What you are asked to bring

  • Safety glasses (or your regular eyeglasses)
  • A dust mask
  • Optional: A work apron or a big shirt to protect your clothing. (Nevada Gourd Society will have great work aprons for sale at the class check-in table or inside the Exhibit Hall.)

About the instructor

After retirement in 2015, Pam started teaching gourd art in Southern and Northern Nevada. She says the finished gourd is always a thrill because sometimes the end product is not what you had in mind when you started it--the gourd guides and talks to you as you go. Pam particularly enjoys teaching beginners, making their introduction to gourd art fun and informational. She also teaches wire wrapping of gemstones and likes to incorporate her gemstones in many of her gourd pieces.
