Class description
This class will teach students how to confidently design and create without a stencil, no skills necessary! A prepared and cleaned gourd will be provided. Students will layout the Hawaiian leaf pattern and learn stippling and shading techniques with the pyrography tool.
Students will also learn how to easily cut their pattern out. The techniques learned can be applied to many other designs, examples will be given in class.
The instructor will provide to the students : class-ready gourd, pattern , inks, dyes, dust mask, gloves.
What you are required to bring
Each student is required to bring the following items to class:
- Dremel or equivalent rotary tool with cutting bits (See Jelena's contact info below if you have questions about the cutting bits)
- Pyrography tool
- Eye protection - Safety glasses or eyeglasses
About the instructor
Jelena Clay is originally from Saratoga, CA and relocated to the islands over 30 years ago. She is a nationally recognized Gourd and Fiber Artist and has a deep knowledge of Hawaiian arts. She is the owner of Banyan Gallery located in Hilo town and has her work represented by Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
