Class description

Join artist instructor Rosario Wilke in this new, easy and exciting project. For intermediate students, you will be guided through step by step in the creation of this beautiful three-dimensional piece of art. You will learn the basics in creating depth among the various flowers, and by carving in detail each of the flowers will give flow and movement to the entire composition. Also work on cutouts to create negative spaces, creating a delicate and elegant array of floating flowers.

Along with this you will learn to identify the shadows and the source of lighting to be more accurate when carving and shading. Finishing the piece will use metallic and transparent acrylic paint to embellish and enhance the flowers and shadows of this beautiful piece giving it even a better depth to the whole composition.

Written step by step instructions will be provided by the instructor along with a class-ready gourd, stick'n burn pattern to accelerate the process, acrylic paints, inks, sealer and other dimensional paints.

Most will finish the project in class. Students will finish all the carving and the painting of the flowers. Students may need to finish painting the body of the gourd at home.

What you are required to bring

Each student is required to bring the following items to class:

• Dust musk or respirator
• Dremel or similar rotary tool (no Dremel battery operated please), all the burrs you already own (if you need a comprehensive list please contact the instructor)
• Heat gun
• Wood burner with your favorite tip
• Small paint brushes
• Sanding sponges
• Riffler files
• Your general gourding tool box will be helpful

About the instructor

Rosario Wilke born in Bolivia is a self-taught and an accomplished fine artist and instructor. Her pieces are distinctive for being one of a kind from contemporary to southwest style. Her work is recognizable because of the different carving techniques she employs and her use of copper in many forms.
